Getting Fit Guest Interview! – Inspiration!!

One of my photography colleagues (Ali over at Rock the Drops), was gracious enough to share what her transformation has been like!  {she’s ROCKIN that transformation too, excuse the pun!}

Where were you when you realized something had to change?  what lit your fire?
For a long long time, I knew I needed to do something but I just sat there and ignored it.  I absolutely hated my body.  I turned 33 in August and I kind of had a moment and said to myself, you know I’m going to get rid of this weight.  I’ve used it as a protection thru life and really what am I protecting myself from anymore?  I have a great husband and wonderful little girl. (gorgeous family – go visit her website and check out the About Us link!)  What lit my fire was, I was so tired of hating myself and being so self conscious anywhere I went.  I didn’t want my daughter to be ashamed of me either.  I had had enough!

Where you are now? (how long did that take?)
Right now, I’ve lost 32 pounds in 11 weeks.  I started right after my 33rd birthday.

What do you love best about your transformation?
Oh my Gosh, I love seeing the fat melt off and my body is starting to tone.  I still have more to lose but I have never in my life felt so confident before.

Any health benefits you’ve seen? any benefits for your family?
My husband is eating the same things as me and he’s lost 14 pounds so far.  He’s not working out as much as I am but that’s because he gets up super early to get to work and is tired at the end of the day.  My daughter is trying new things.  She’s so so on it so far.  I sneak in veggies etc and she doesn’t notice which is nice.

What exactly did you do to transform? what were your general eating plan and exercise regimine?
I work out 6 days a week and eat 5 or 6 times a day.  The plan is always changing because you have to constantly trick your body.  I did the exercise bike for weeks at home and then I was getting so bored with it I joined my local YMCA and started changing it up by going to classes and using the eliptical/treadmill etc.  I try to do something different every day.

What might a typical day’s schedule look like for you?
I get my daughter ready for school and then I go to the gym.  I usually work out for 1.5 to 2 hours.  Just depending on my schedule.  Believe me, this is not easy to dedicate so much time to doing this but in the end it is so worth it.  Then I get ready for the day and have about 4 hours to get my ‘work’ done.  I’m a professional photographer and own a backdrop company.

What did you eat? What did you do in the gym?
I change my food up a lot b/c if you eat the same things all the time it gets boring…. But, typical day is I have oatmeal with my daughter before she goes to school and then once I get back from the gym I have a protein shake.  Usually a butterfinger protein shake.  Oh my gosh it’s so yummy and it’s not even butterfinger.  It has spinach in it! (RECIPE BELOW!)  Then I will have a salad or soup and some meat for my lunch, then maybe some almonds or a snack.. Then my hubby gets home from work and we both have another protein shake.  Then we actually cook dinner together.  It’s been so awesome.  I NEVER cooked before.  Now, I’m finding all sorts of new recipes and we enjoy working together on dinner.

What do I do in the gym?
Well Monday’s is my huge calorie burning day not because I have to but because I want to. :)   This morning I did a cardio/step class and then the treadmill.  I burned 750 calories then tonight I will go to my favorite class Cardio Kickboxing.  I will probably burn another 450 to 500 calories.  I obviously don’t do this every day but once I started Kickboxing, I love it and it’s only offered Monday nights and Saturday mornings at my gym so I go. :)

How did you deal with meal planning for a family? esp with kids who don’t like new foods!
We plan our meals on Sundays.  We do a lot of cooking too on Sundays so things are ready to go.  Tonight we are having spaghetti squash lasagna.  I’ve never had it but going to try it!  We finally found a great recipe for protein pancakes that our daughter loves!  She’s very picky so we just make her try things.  She loved the pancakes yesterday so we had made a triple batch so she has breakfast in the mornings.

What are your go to meals for the crazy days when you don’t have time to cook a nice meal?
a protein shake or a salad.  We rarely go out anymore.  We live in a small town that doesn’t have a lot to offer.  Pretty much Subway or Applebees….. So it’s pretty limiting.

What is your best strategy for dealing with cravings for the “bad” stuff? (chocolate, soda)
Before I started, I was drinking Starbucks (well we only had Caribou) at the time 3 to 5 times a week.  I wasn’t just having plain black coffee.  I was having the 500 calorie drinks.  I quit coffee and pop and all energy drinks.  I very rarely drink it anymore.  I was drinking the energy drinks to help not have insane headaches from not drinking coffee but after a while I just didn’t want any energy drinks.  The more I work out the more energy I have.  Chocolate…..hmm that’s another story… I still eat it but it’s my protein bars and shakes.  Is it real chocolate like my favorite milky ways?  no way…. but once you cut that sugar out of your diet you won’t crave it anymore.  I could honestly care less to have it.

Yesterday, I was at the grocery store and with Halloween coming up in two days, I sat there and looked at that candy and I just thought, Nope.. I’m not buying you.  I wrote on my facebook status apologizing to my neighbor’s lol that we just won’t be handing out candy this year.

Did you find ways to deal with stress without turning to food?
I went thru 2 weeks of INSANE stress with work.  It was so bad.  I haven’t been that stressed out in years.  Well, I was so proud of myself.  I didn’t binge like I used to.  See, I used food as a comfort.  I ate out of every emotion I was feeling and it was always chocolate.  I’d hide my foods.  Even when I was a kid I’d binge on food.  So, what did I do to I  went to the gym.  I feel so much better when I’m working out despite how I look lol.  Thankfully, I don’t care if I look pretty when I go there.  No make up on no hair done.  I’m just there to sweat!  lol

How did you get back on track if you had a not so great day with food/exercise?
I honestly haven’t had a bad day yet.  I have my fitness pal and use it every day.  It helps me stay accountable and not go over my limits. Yes, I treat myself to a little something here and there but I have not gone so overboard with my eating that I feel guilty.

Any other advice you’d give for someone starting to get fit? or someone who’s lost motivation along the way?
I honestly don’t think it’s motivation that is what is getting me thru this……. I think it is my sheer determination to be free of this addiction and to live and be healthy.  I have struggled with my weight for years.  I lost 40 pounds before I got pregnant with my daughter in 2006.  I felt great!  I got pregnant and gained it back.  I had no motivation to keep going.  And life just got in the way.  I think you literally have to carve time out for yourself to do this.  You have to be so tired of being not fit and so tired of hating yourself.  We lost our second child two years ago and all I did was eat.  I was depressed all the time. I couldn’t move on. I was stuck.  I was so stuck I was mad at every woman out there getting pregnant too.  We still have just our daughter but I had to come to the conclusion that if my little girl is the only child I will ever have I am happy with that.  Once I could get over that ( I know everyone has a different story that keeps them from getting to their goals) and then got so tired of hating myself, that is when I really got a fire lit with in me.  You just have to be at the end of your rope to stick with it.

I look at Ruche (one of my favorite clothing stores) and just wish and wish I could wear their clothes.  I haven’t worn a dress since my wedding day, I don’t own a pair or shorts or even a bathing suit.  I said to myself, I am 33 years old. I want to enjoy life.  I want to proud of who I am and what I look like.  I told my little girl that when I get to my goal weight her and I will go by some dresses.  I have 40 more pounds to go but I went into a boutique the other day which I would normally never go in or even think about going in.  I bought clothes from those stores and they were MEDIUMS.  I haven’t seen that word in my closet in years!  I started out being a 1x/2x in some things.
